The Tommentary
wiki page, updated Friday April 18, 2008

Robert M. Price has been studying and teaching (even preaching on) the Gospel of Thomas for many years. It has gradually become clearer and clearer to him. But at the same time, he has been mindful of the danger of making it too clear, reinterpreting it and whittling it down to size just so it won't seem so impenetrable and frustrating. In his commentary on the fifth gospel, Price preserves the balance: he shows how the text need not strike us as strange at all and yet how alien its assumptions are to our way of thinking.
Price also weighs in on the various debates among scholars: is Thomas based on the canonical gospels? Is it completely independent of them? Who wrote it? What is the underlying theology? How old is the book?
Thomas contains close parallels to sayings well known from the conventional gospels, and it is easy to take them for granted and concentrate on the new, esoteric material. The Tommentary does not cheat these passages.

This is offered as either a print book, or a collection of MP3 audio files. There is nothing like a good old fashioned book. But, MP3s can be listened to on your commute to work, and you get them immediately when you purchase, and don't have to wait for the UPS guy to come. But... we offer either!

This is a classic and a MUST HAVE. With a intro by our own Dr. Robert M. Price. I cannot recommend any single volume more highly than this one for the student interested in the study of the "Historical Jesus"
I am not a scholar, or even an academic. I created this edition primarily for myself. But then thought I would make it available to others.

The Making of a Modern Gospel
What is a gospel? And why do I consider the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar to be one? Isn't a gospel by definition one of the books of the Bible? If so, then nothing written in recent centuries could be counted as a gospel. This is because the "canon" of scripture (the official table of contents) was settled back in the fourth century C.E. Who settled the matter? Who decided what writings should be included, excluded? Various synods of bishops meeting here and there in North Africa and Rome. Who gave them the authority to make such a decision? Keep in mind that the Bible is a book many people have lived by and died for, believing the book to be the written Word of God. But no one ever claimed that the voice of God suddenly rang out and told the bishops which books to include. Being an editor of fiction anthologies myself, I know this would make the selection process a lot simpler. But, no, like me, the bishops made their own judgment calls. Did they make the right choices?
